Vedanta’s goal of facilitating sustainable development among rural communities is closely linked to the enhancement of rural infrastructure. We have taken up critical infrastructural work in the regions where we operate, building approach roads and bridges, drinking water amenities, irrigation support and watershed development, community toilets and sanitation facilities, schools and hospitals, community halls, sports and recreation centres, gardens and many more, changing the contours of rural hinterlands.
Rejuvenation of Community Waterbodies
Desilting and restoration activities of several waterbodies is undertaken on a regular basis around our operations in Kalahandi and Jharsuguda districts, Odisha and in Korba, Chhattisgarh, with the active participation of employee volunteers and professional experts. In FY23 alone, over 40 waterbodies were restored in the communities. Further, our teams also organize public rallies and street plays in the community to spread awareness on the need to conserve water.
Project Clean Energy
Residents in Lanjigarh, Kalahandi predominantly rely on traditional energy sources like wood for their household needs, resulting in health issues and indoor pollution due to the emitted smoke. This project was conceived with the purpose of advocating for clean energy usage, improving energy efficiency, and adopting environmentally friendly technologies. Vedanta Lanjigarh aims to positively impact over 5,000 rural households by replacing kerosene or paraffin lanterns with solar lights and traditional chulhas with fuel-efficient ones. Vedanta Lanjigarh has already assisted 315 households by promoting fuel-efficient chulhas and 850 households by endorsing solar lights, reaching a total of 1,265 households to date.
