Our Business Units across Odisha and Chhattisgarh have worked closely with the state governments, district and communities in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, reaching 10 lakh people in the process. We undertook many initiatives for local communities around our areas of operations in Kalahandi, Jharsuguda, Korba and adjoining areas, towards ensuring grassroots preparedness as a critical first step towards combating COVID-19:

  • 34,000 numbers of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) have been provided to the Government of Odisha.
  • We extended critical support to the district administration’s COVID hospitals in Jharsuguda and Bhawanipatna. We supported the 110-bedded COVID hospital in Jharsuguda with INR 2 crores worth of medical equipment such as ventilators, corona kits, oxygen concentrators, nebulizers, specialized medical gear and other critical infrastructure. Likewise, the COVID hospital in Bhawanipatna has been given PPE, sanitizers etc. Both hospitals together cater to roughly 6 lakh people.
  • Our own hospital in Lanjigarh was in a state of preparedness to support the district administration, and now offers Telemedicine facility alongside a 24X7 helpline to address concerns. The hospital continues to serve about 7,000 patients per month from the community.
  • BALCO Medical Center (BMC) developed isolation wards within the hospital and three other venues in the region to cater to potential cases from the region. Additionally, BALCO was also regularly monitoring the health of BMC’s current patients and ensuring doorstep delivery of medicines to them.
  • We have made available upto a month’s supply of rations to more than 5,000 daily wage earners, slum dwellers, needy families and marginal households around its operations.
  • Over 11,000 workers were provided meals throughout the day along with other essentials in our plants.
  • In our BALCO and Jharsuguda operations, farm-to-fork projects were initiated to give farmers in the periphery opportunities to continue earning their livelihoods by selling their produce directly to families in the company townships.
  • Our Mobile Health Units worked with anganwadi workers and paramedic staff to conduct awareness sessions against COVID-19 across 120 villages in Jharsuguda, Lanjigarh and Korba to spread awareness on COVID-19 prevention and social-distancing, in addition to distributing masks and soaps free of cost.
  • We have undertaken fumigation and disinfection of all prominent public places, local areas, public offices and township.
  • We have distributed more than 2.5 lakh reusable masks to rural residents, district administration, police and jail authorities, media, and other critical personnel in Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Punjab who are exposed as a part of their duties. These masks were stitched by rural women’s SHGs affiliated with the CSR arms of our Business Units, providing them livelihood in these times.
  • Thousands of Vedanta employees and business partners have also voluntarily contributed one day’s salary for COVID relief. Many employees and families have also donated to central and/or state relief funds, NGOs, etc., and have reached out to the needy and unprivileged personally, distributing ration and other essentials.
