Vedanta supplies drinking water to Jharsuguda locals facing water scarcity

Jharsuguda, Odisha; 25th May, 2021: Vedanta, India’s largest producer of aluminium and value-added products, is supplying drinking water to thousands of Jharsuguda’s residents facing an acute shortage of drinking water due to the ongoing summer. Last month, the company started a daily supply of drinking water to 16 wards of Jharsuguda district marked as water scarcity areas and will continue to cater to the region’s needs throughout peak summer. Currently, more than 15,000 locals belonging to Kabrastanpada, Talibhata and Itabhata, BTM Nua Sahi, Industrial Estate, Mahuatoli, Badheimunda, Rangiapada, Hospital Road, and other wards are getting their daily quota of water through water tankers deployed by Vedanta.

Speaking about the company’s initiative, Mr. CN Singh, CEO – Vedanta Ltd., Jharsuguda, said, “We are committed to creating a lasting positive impact in the communities where we operate, through our operations and social development initiatives. The extreme summer weather has induced water scarcity in the region, adding to the ongoing distress due to the pandemic. Besides strengthening the Jharsuguda District Administration’s efforts to manage the pandemic scenario and provide proper care to the COVID affected, we are also working on other fronts, such as alleviating drinking water concerns of the local communities and other problems arising due to the heatwave.”

Every year Vedanta partners with the Jharsuguda Municipality to supply drinking water to localities facing acute water shortage during the summer season, and keep people from depending on unhygienic and unreliable water sources. The company has created various community infrastructures in its peripheral villages, like ponds, tube wells, dug wells, percolation tanks, etc. for ensuring water availability round the year. Each summer, the company also undertakes cleaning of ponds and other water sources in the nearby areas.
