Women weavers showcase Odisha’s Sambalpuri heritage on the runway

Bhubaneswar, Odisha; October 12, 2026: Bringing Odisha’s rich handloom heritage to the forefront of contemporary fashion, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, showcased the craftsmanship of its women-led handloom initiative, VedSuta, at Bhubaneswar Times Fashion Week 2026. In collaboration with a fashion house, traditional Sambalpuri sarees produced by VedSuta artisans were reimagined into contemporary designer ensembles for the runway. The showcase also witnessed women beneficiaries of the initiative walking the ramp in their own textile creations, placing the artisans behind the intricate weaves in the spotlight.

The collection brought together the distinctive motifs, vibrant colours and intricate weaving traditions of Sambalpuri textiles with contemporary silhouettes. From traditional sarees to designer interpretations, the showcase demonstrated the versatility of Odisha’s handloom heritage and its growing relevance in modern fashion. More importantly, it provided the women artisans with an opportunity to present their craftsmanship before a wider audience of fashion enthusiasts, industry professionals and potential consumers.

Speaking on the occasion, C Chandru, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “Odisha’s traditional crafts represent generations of skill, creativity and cultural knowledge. Through initiatives like VedSuta, we are creating opportunities for women artisans to build sustainable livelihoods while carrying this heritage forward. Their participation at Bhubaneswar Times Fashion Week reflects the possibilities that emerge when grassroots enterprises gain access to larger platforms. We remain committed to supporting women-led businesses and enabling local craftsmanship to reach wider markets.”

Sharing her experience, Rinky Meher, a VedSuta artisan from Ragunathpalli, said, “We have grown up seeing Sambalpuri sarees being woven in our homes and villages. To see our work transformed into beautiful designer outfits and presented at a fashion show was a very proud moment for us. It gives us confidence that the skills we have learnt and practiced for years can take us to places we never imagined.”

Another beneficiary, Nirupama Padhan, a VedSuta SHG member from Ragunathpalli who participated in the ramp walk, added, “I had never imagined that I would walk on a fashion runway wearing something created through our own hard work. Standing there and seeing people appreciate our fabrics was a special experience. We hope that more people discover Sambalpuri textiles and that our work continues to bring new opportunities for women in our village.”

VedSuta forms part of the larger livelihood development ecosystem of the Subhalaxmi Cooperative, established in 2008. Today, the cooperative supports more than 5,500 women across 510 Self Help Groups in 106 villages of Jharsuguda, facilitating financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, skill development and market access. Through ventures spanning handloom textiles, terracotta crafts, jute products and other rural enterprises, the cooperative continues to strengthen women’s participation in the local economy.

Beyond the runway, the showcase reflects Vedanta Aluminium’s larger commitment to strengthening rural entrepreneurship, preserving indigenous craftsmanship and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities. In FY26, the company’s community development initiatives in Jharsuguda positively impacted over 7 lakh lives across 61 villages, spanning education, healthcare, livelihoods, women’s empowerment and community infrastructure. By connecting grassroots enterprises with emerging markets and mainstream platforms, Vedanta Aluminium continues to contribute to India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, where traditional skills, women-led businesses and local communities play an integral role in the nation’s growth story.
