21st April 2026
- The company’s Project Vedkala empowers 50 local artisans through traditional art and sustainable income generation
Jharsuguda, Odisha, 21st April 2026: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, marked World Art Day by celebrating the creativity of women and children in Siriapali village, Jharsuguda. Under its Vedkala community development initiative, the company engaged over 150 community members through a vibrant line-up of activities, including bamboo craft-making workshops, drawing and rangoli competitions, debates, and cultural dance performances.
Under Project Vedkala, more than 50 local artisans in Jharsuguda are currently being trained in Bamboo, Saura, and Sabai Grass handicrafts. The initiative aims to strengthen traditional skills while creating steady income opportunities through wider market access.
The event was attended by Rasmita Sunani, Master Bookkeeper, Siriapali Gram Panchayat and Pushpanjali Seth, Board Member, Subhalaxmi Cooperative, who joined the community members in honouring Odisha’s rich heritage of art and craftsmanship.
Speaking on the occasion, C Chandru, CEO, Vedanta Jharsuguda, said, “Preserving our rich cultural heritage goes hand-in-hand with community empowerment. Project Vedkala reflects our commitment to nurturing traditional art forms while creating viable livelihood opportunities for our local artisans. By linking grassroots talent with wider markets, our goal is to help our communities build a self-reliant future.”
Rasmita Sunani, Master Book keeper, Siriapali Gram Panchayat, added, “Platforms such as these not only celebrate our traditional art but also provide women and children with the confidence to showcase their talents on a larger stage. It is inspiring to see our local heritage being preserved and supported so actively, creating real opportunities for our artisans.”
Project Vedkala is designed to bridge traditional craftsmanship with modern market needs. By equipping artisans with knowledge of advanced design techniques and entrepreneurial skills, the initiative ensures that indigenous art forms remain economically viable. This approach also helps foster financial independence, particularly for women, enabling them to become micro-entrepreneurs within their communities.
Alongside Vedkala, Vedanta Aluminium also promotes other traditional crafts through initiatives like VedMurtika, which promotes eco friendly terracotta and clay crafts. Together, these programmes reflect the company’s ongoing commitment to nurturing local talent, preserving cultural heritage, and building resilient, self sustaining communities across its operational vicinity.
