Vedanta Aluminium: Making in India, Building for the World
25th September 2026
India’s manufacturing landscape is entering a new phase of growth, shaped by expanding infrastructure, cleaner mobility, renewable energy, urbanisation and the rise of advanced manufacturing. As these sectors scale, the demand for materials that are lightweight, durable, recyclable and versatile is also growing. Aluminium sits at the centre of this transition, enabling applications across automobiles, power transmission, construction, railways, aerospace, defence and emerging clean-energy technologies. The opportunity, therefore, goes beyond producing more aluminium. It lies in building a stronger domestic value chain capable of delivering high-quality, increasingly specialised products that can meet India’s evolving manufacturing needs while enhancing the country’s competitiveness in global supply chains.
For Vedanta Aluminium Metal Limited (VAML), India’s largest aluminium producer, this opportunity is being addressed through scale, integration and increasing value addition. In FY26, VAML produced 2.45 million tonnes of aluminium, accounting for more than half of India’s total aluminium output, supported by an integrated manufacturing footprint across Odisha and Chhattisgarh. This includes its 5 MTPA alumina refinery at Lanjigarh, the world’s largest single-location aluminium smelter at Jharsuguda (ex-China), and BALCO’s 0.58 MTPA aluminium operations in Chhattisgarh, creating a value chain that extends from raw materials and refining to smelting and advanced aluminium products. VAML is also India’s largest billet producer, the world’s largest aluminium wire rod producer, and the first Indian company to supply Primary Foundry Alloy to the domestic market. Its products today serve customers across more than 60 countries, placing Made-in-India aluminium at the heart of both domestic manufacturing and global industrial supply chains.
Commenting on the company’s role in strengthening India’s manufacturing capabilities, Rajesh Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “India’s manufacturing growth is creating significant opportunities for aluminium, particularly across sectors such as mobility, infrastructure, energy and advanced manufacturing. At Vedanta Aluminium, our focus is on strengthening the domestic aluminium value chain through scale, value addition, innovation and responsible manufacturing. As we expand our capabilities and take Made-in-India aluminium solutions to customers across the world, we remain committed to supporting India’s emergence as a globally competitive manufacturing hub.”
This ambition is increasingly reflected in VAML’s product portfolio. The company commands more than half of India’s domestic billet market, with its billet manufacturing capacity at Jharsuguda already expanded to 830 KTPA and a roadmap to increase overall billet capacity across its operations to 1.25 MTPA. It is also strengthening its capabilities across Primary Foundry Alloy, wire rods, slabs and specialised aluminium solutions for automotive and electric mobility, renewable energy, power transmission, construction, aerospace, defence and engineering. The progression from primary metal to increasingly specialised products reflect a larger shift: creating greater value from aluminium produced in India while enabling the industries that will define the country’s next phase of manufacturing growth.
As it expands its contribution to India’s manufacturing ambitions, Vedanta Aluminium remains equally committed to creating lasting value beyond its operations. Reaching over 10 lakh people across Odisha and Chhattisgarh, the company’s community development initiatives span education, healthcare, livelihoods, women empowerment and skill development through programmes such as Project Vidya, Subhalaxmi Cooperative, VeDakshata, Nand Ghar, BALCO’s Sakhi Project and BALCO Medical Centre. Together, these efforts reflect a broader belief that India’s growth story is strongest when industrial progress goes hand in hand with social progress. By building globally competitive manufacturing capabilities while investing in people and communities, Vedanta Aluminium is helping shape a future that is not only made in India but built to create shared value for generations to come.
