- 5,000+ saplings to be planted as part of month-long drive; over 1.2 lakh trees already planted across region
Bhubaneswar, June 8, 2026: Marking World Environment Day, Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, has launched a month-long plantation drive across Odisha’s Kalahandi, Rayagada and Koraput districts, targeting the plantation of 5,000+ fruit-bearing saplings. These efforts build on the company’s broader afforestation initiatives that have already seen over 1.2 lakh trees planted across the region in partnership with local communities. The initiative was kickstarted with the planting of over 1500 saplings across government institutions including schools, PHCs, hostels and anganwadis, aimed at strengthening green cover in public spaces.
The plantation drive focuses on fruit-bearing and native species, enabling multiple benefits including improved soil moisture retention, erosion control, enhanced biodiversity, and supplementary livelihood opportunities for rural households. The community-led approach ensures long-term survival of saplings and local ownership of green assets.
Sharing his experience, Samru Majhi from Dongijhula village, said, “The plantation drive is helping improve our surroundings and soil conditions, which supports our farming. The fruit-bearing trees will also benefit our families in the long run. It is a meaningful step for both the environment and our livelihoods.”
Vedanta Aluminium continues to drive community development across its operational regions through initiatives focused on environmental conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and rural infrastructure, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive and sustainable growth.
