Vedanta Aluminium conducts free eye screening camp for drivers in Jharsuguda
28th May 2025- More than 1,500 drivers benefitted from the camp, organised as part of its health & safety initiatives
Jharsuguda, Odisha, May 28, 2025: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, conducted a free eye screening camp for commercial and technical vehicle drivers at its Jharsuguda operations. The extensive initiative, which was organised in collaboration with Trilochan Netralaya, underscored the company’s commitment to ensuring the health and safety of its employees, business partners and community members.
Through this initiative, more than 1,500 drivers operating across various locations within the plant area have been screened for detecting potential vision-related issues. Those diagnosed with visual impairments were provided with expert medical advice and corrective spectacles at no cost, helping fix vision-related issues and enhancing their ability to work with utmost safety and confidence.
The initiative aimed to promote long-term eye health, enhance road safety, and support the overall well-being of drivers employed in various roles at the plant, who are together integral to the smooth functioning of Vedanta’s logistics and supply chain operations. It was organized at a crucial time as the onset of the monsoon season begins in the region. With heavy rains and winds increasing the possibility of unpredictable conditions while driving, the eye camp is expected to help the drivers undertake their duties in a safer manner.
Sharing the impact of the initiative, Sunil Gupta, COO – Vedanta Aluminium said, “At Vedanta, we consider our employees and business partners to be the most essential pillar of our operations. Our Sarathis – the dedicated drivers who help keep our supply chain smooth and seamless – are vital to our progress. This initiative is therefore another step towards ensuring their complete well-being, in line with our deep commitment to a culture of care.”
Expressing his gratitude, Mr. Gangadhar Luhar, a driver at the company’s operations, said, “I was struggling with vision issues after driving for long hours. The thorough eye tests at the camp helped diagnosed a minor vision issue, and the corrective glasses I received have made a huge difference. Now, I can drive confidently with clear vision and reduced eye strain.”
As part of ongoing efforts to support its staff members and business partners, Vedanta Jharsuguda has been proactively organizing health camps, awareness programs, and safety initiatives tailored to their health and safety requirements. A key initative among these is Suraksha Sarathi, a dedicated safety awareness program for drivers operating in and around Vedanta’s operations, aimed at reinforcing best practices in road and occupational safety. Previously, the company has launched a Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) and Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) simulation training centre to promote road safety among drivers working at its mega aluminium plant. These initiatives reflect Vedanta’s focus on creating a secure and supportive environment for the drivers who play a critical role in keeping its operations running smoothly.
