Vedanta Aluminium Builds a Culture of Ownership Through Cleanliness

As India advances towards the goal of ‘Swachh Bharat’, cleanliness is gaining importance as a reflection of collective responsibility. It is not only about the appearance of the environment; it also reflects everyday discipline and responsibility in workplaces, public spaces and communities. In large industrial settings, these values influence how resources are managed, workplaces are maintained and people take responsibility for their surroundings.

At Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, cleanliness is part of the company’s way of working. Various initiatives encourage collective responsibility across its plants, residential areas and neighbouring communities. By creating cleaner, safer and more efficient environments, the company supports sustainable development and the broader effort to build ‘Viksit Bharat’.

This culture of responsibility is reflected across Vedanta Aluminium’s operations. Its plant in Jharsuguda is a notable example. The workplace is managed through regular reviews and continuous improvement initiatives guided by the 5S methodology, which promotes organised, efficient and disciplined workspaces. Teams regularly identify and remove surplus materials, helping make work areas more organised and enabling better use of space.

These efforts have restored more than 400 square metres of workspace and reduced employees’ daily travel within the workplace by more than three kilometres. This has helped improve both physical comfort and operational efficiency. In recognition of these efforts, Vedanta Aluminium’s Jharsuguda smelter and power plant received 5S certification from the Quality Circle Forum of India, in association with the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers. Vedanta Meadows, the company’s residential township in Jharsuguda, also received the 2026 M.K. Rout Pollution Control Appreciation Award in the Industrial Township category.

A culture of individual responsibility lies at the heart of these achievements. Through the ‘My Area and My Machine’ initiative, employees and business partners take responsibility for specific work areas and equipment. This encourages a stronger sense of ownership and pride in their surroundings. Recognition programmes such as ‘Utkrista’ honour teams that demonstrate high standards of workplace organisation and cleanliness, helping make these practices part of everyday work.

While workplace organisation begins with individual responsibility, maintaining cleanliness on a larger scale also requires responsible resource management. At BALCO, this approach is put into practice through an organised 5S system, mechanised cleaning and systematic waste segregation across work areas.

The ‘Waste to Wealth’ initiative focuses on recovering, recycling and responsibly managing materials. This improves resource efficiency and helps reduce environmental impact. Dedicated collection systems and organised management of unused materials connect cleanliness with the responsible and efficient use of resources.

Responsible consumption is also a focus at Vedanta Aluminium’s Lanjigarh operations. The company is strengthening measures to reduce waste and protect the environment. Under the Confederation of Indian Industry’s ‘Plastic Use Protocol’, the Lanjigarh facility has been certified as a single-use plastic-free workplace. This reflects the company’s commitment to building a more resource-conscious workplace culture, where cleanliness and sustainability go hand in hand.

The principles of responsibility extend beyond the plant and into community well-being. Recognising the importance of sanitation to public health and quality of life, Vedanta Aluminium has introduced several initiatives to help create cleaner, healthier communities.

Under ‘Project Nirmal’, the company installed 50 bio-toilets at 27 locations across its Kurloi, Jamkhani and Ghogharpalli coal mine areas during FY2025. More than 4,700 community members have benefited. Alongside these facilities at schools, Anganwadi centres and government healthcare centres, the company also conducts sanitation awareness programmes, supports safe drinking water infrastructure and organises community-led cleanliness drives. These efforts help strengthen community responsibility for caring for shared spaces.

Similar initiatives are underway through the ‘Health and Sanitation Project’ in Sijimali, covering 16 villages across the Kalahandi and Rayagada districts. Focused on cleanliness awareness, sanitation infrastructure and waste management, the project reached more than 8,800 people in FY2027.

Together, these initiatives show how cleanliness can become a lasting culture of shared responsibility, rather than a one-time activity. They contribute to cleaner workplaces and healthier communities, while supporting the broader goals of ‘Swachh Bharat’ and ‘Viksit Bharat’.
