World Malaria Day: Vedanta Aluminium spreads awareness among 1,000+ people in Jharsuguda
28th April 2026
Jharsuguda, Odisha, 28th April 2026: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, observed World Malaria Day through an extensive community health drive organized across Keldamal, Gudigaon and Barhamunda villages in Jharsuguda. Aligned with World Health Organization’s (WHO) global campaign theme “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.”, the initiative sought to empower rural communities with the awareness and tools needed to eliminate malaria.
The programme engaged more than 1,000 community members through structured awareness sessions on malaria prevention practices, early symptom recognition, and the importance of timely testing and treatment. To ensure deeper last-mile outreach, informational leaflets were distributed across villages. In addition, over 40 free malaria tests were conducted on the spot with all test results returning negative, reflecting the effectiveness of sustained preventive interventions in the region.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, C Chandru, CEO, Vedanta Jharsuguda, said, “Preventive healthcare has been a consistent focus area for us. World Malaria Day provides an important opportunity to reinforce awareness around early detection and prevention; while continuing the sustained health initiatives we carry out in close coordination with local authorities. Our efforts are anchored in regular engagement, trust, and practical on-ground interventions that help communities stay healthy and resilient.”
Netarani Birganthia, a resident of Gudigaon, said, “The awareness sessions and free help us understand symptoms early and take timely action. Having such services close to home gives our families greater confidence and reassurance, and we appreciate Vedanta’s continued efforts in this area.”
The malaria awareness drive forms part of Vedanta Aluminium’s broader commitment to strengthening last mile access to preventive and primary healthcare for its surrounding communities. Central to this effort are the company’s Mobile Health Units (MHUs), which provide doorstep healthcare services to remote villages across the district. The MHUs offer a wide range of services, including general health check ups, maternal and child healthcare, screening for communicable diseases, and distribution of essential medicines, significantly reducing healthcare access barriers for community members.
These mobile interventions are complemented by sustained community awareness programmes addressing malaria, dengue, filaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, deworming, hygiene, and sanitation practices. In addition, advanced diagnostic facilities in Jharsuguda and Laikera provide pathology services for early disease detection, enabling a continuum of care.
Vedanta Aluminium’s integrated healthcare ecosystem reflects a holistic, prevention led approach to improving health outcomes, building long-term resilience, and empowering communities across the district.
