Vedanta Aluminium’s advanced logistics network transports more than 55 million tonnes of cargo in FY2025
11th August 2025New Delhi, 11th August 2025: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, is powering one of the most sophisticated and high-volume logistics networks in the country, having moved an impressive 55+ million tonnes of raw materials and finished aluminium products in FY2025. For context, in the same financial year, Indian Railways transported approximately 1,617 million tonnes of freight cargo. Vedanta Aluminium’s movement accounts for nearly 4% of that volume, an extraordinary feat for a private-sector player.
Spanning operations majorly across Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh, the company’s logistics ecosystem exemplifies scale, precision, and sustainability. The advanced logistics network moves alumina from its captive refinery in Lanjigarh, coal from nearby mines, and high-grade aluminium products bound for both domestic and global markets. Vedanta Aluminium has a presence in nearly every major port in India and stands out as the largest container cargo exporter from Paradip Port—one of the country’s largest ports. Featuring among India’s leading exporters, the company ships to more than 100 destinations across six continents, reinforcing the nation’s ambition to become a global manufacturing and trade powerhouse under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “At Vedanta Aluminium, logistics is a strategic enabler of our industrial leadership, sustainability goals, and nation-building mission. With an environment-first approach, we have built one of India’s most advanced and future-ready logistics systems that handles more than 55 million tonnes of cargo, with plans to scale up to 80 million tonnes. As India strides towards becoming a Viksit Bharat, efficient and sustainable industrial supply chains will be pivotal. Our efforts are aligned with the PM’s Gati Shakti Project, as we aim to create a digitally integrated, multi-modal transport and logistics network that enhances connectivity, reduces costs, and improves efficiency across sectors. Vedanta Aluminium is setting a new benchmark, showcasing how Indian industry can grow responsibly, inclusively, and globally.”
Deepak Gulati, Chief Supply Chain Officer, Vedanta Aluminium, adds, “At Vedanta Aluminium, railways form the backbone of our logistics operations, supported by a fleet of over 40 dedicated rakes for raw material movement. We are proud to be the largest customer of CONCOR (Container Corporation of India), partnering with them to streamline our export logistics. With plans to scale operations, we continue to invest in digitalisation and sustainability at the core of our logistics ecosystem.”
Apart from its scale, Vedanta’s logistics system stands out is its environment-first design. With a sharp focus on rail-based transportation, the company has significantly lowered its environmental footprint. Cargos moved by rail replace dependence on trucks, thereby reducing emissions, diesel use, and road congestion. More than 40 dedicated rakes are currently in use, with plans underway to expand this fleet to more than 50, thereby supporting the efficient movement of raw materials. Moreover, Vedanta is one of the largest freight customers of Indian Railways’ East Coast Zone, a testament to its rail-centric approach.
Even for moving goods within the plant, the company operates India’s largest fleet of lithium-ion electric forklifts, with 75 forklifts in total. Equipped with smart safety features and real-time monitoring, these machines are building a safer, cleaner, and more efficient workplace.
Going beyond environmental sustainability, Vedanta recently deployed India’s first all-women locomotive team. The team operates and maintains locomotives, handling critical material movement across the facility, redefining traditional gender roles in heavy industries.
Vedanta has also significantly advanced its digitalisation efforts across the supply chain, implementing a digital control tower and vehicle tracking systems. These innovations ensure a resilient and future-ready logistics framework, with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles and digitalisation at its core.
While Vedanta Aluminium’s finished products fuel industries across the globe, its logistics network powers rural economies and local livelihoods. By generating thousands of jobs in transportation, warehousing, maintenance, and allied services, Vedanta’s supply chain acts as a catalyst for inclusive development in India’s hinterlands. The company also contributes significantly through taxes and infrastructure investments, strengthening its role as a silent force in India’s economic engine.
