Vedanta Aluminium Launches 5-Inch Billets, Expands Portfolio Towards 1.25 MTPA Capacity

12th September 2025

  • With over half of India’s billet market, the company is expanding capacity to meet surging domestic and global demand.

New Delhi, 12th September 2025: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer and the country’s top billet manufacturer, today announced the launch of its new 5-inch aluminium billets at ALUMEX India 2025, the nation’s first dedicated exhibition and conference for the aluminium extrusion industry. The 5-inch billets have been developed to serve the growing demand for precision-engineered aluminium in critical applications across various sectors. With their advanced design and broad range of applications, Vedanta Aluminium’s 5-inch billets are poised to unlock new opportunities for downstream industries in India and beyond.

The 5-inch aluminium billets are ideally suited for producing small to medium profiles and extruding seamless tubes for automotive, aerospace, and HVAC industries. Their versatility also extends to manufacturing micro-tubes and condenser tubes for cooling systems, as well as small solid profiles such as electrical busbars, rods, and handles. In addition, the billets are used for hollow profiles like window and door frames, heat sinks, and irrigation tubes, and can be cut into slugs for forging automotive components and aerospace fittings. Along with the new 5-inch launch, Vedanta Aluminium offers a wide billet portfolio ranging from 5 to 12 inches, fully customisable to diverse industry requirements. As a critical feedstock for multiple sectors, our billets deliver superior metallography, metal hygiene, and consistent quality through advanced process controls, backed by strong customer service, technical expertise, and supply chain excellence to ensure both flexibility and reliable performance.

Alongside this significant launch, Vedanta Aluminium also unveiled its roadmap to emerge as one of the world’s leading billet producers and join the elite one million tonne club. The company is on track to expand its billet casting capacity from the current 580 KTPA to 1.25 MTPA, building on its strong leadership in India where it commands more than half of the domestic billet market. With this growth and an aim to expand value added products to 90% of the company’s portfolio, Vedanta Aluminium aims to meet the surging demand from high-growth industries such as electric vehicles, solar energy, railways, building and construction, aerospace, and defence.

Commenting on this significant launch, Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “The launch of our 5-inch billets marks a new milestone in our journey to strengthen India’s aluminium extrusion ecosystem. With their versatility across automotive, aerospace, HVAC, and building applications, these billets will help downstream industries deliver greater precision, performance, and sustainability. As India’s largest billet producer and among the top three globally, we are committed to expanding capacity, innovating across our product portfolio, and positioning India at the forefront of the global aluminium value chain.”

As India’s billet leader, Vedanta Aluminium operates a state-of-the-art 1.8 MTPA aluminium smelter at Jharsuguda, Odisha, and a 0.57 MTPA capacity smelter at BALCO, Korba in Chhattisgarh. Together, these facilities support a billet portfolio that places the company first in India and third globally in billet production. Billets, as a critical semi-finished product for extrusion, are central to a wide spectrum of industries, from traditional sectors such as construction and transport to sunrise sectors such as EVs and renewable energy.

Vedanta Aluminium today offers one of the most extensive billet portfolios in the global market, covering the 1xxx, 3xxx, and 6xxx series and spanning diameters from 5 to 12 inches. The company also pioneers low-carbon billet variants under its Restora and Restora Ultra brands. Restora is produced using renewable energy, significantly reducing its carbon footprint. Restora Ultra goes a step further, recovering aluminium from dross – a by-product of the smelting process, and casting them into premium grade products with an ultra-low carbon footprint, ranking among the lowest in the world.

At ALUMEX India 2025, Vedanta Aluminium is showcasing this next-generation billet range, engineered with advanced technologies such as Wagstaff Hot-Top Air Slip casting and Hertwich homogenizing furnaces to deliver superior metallurgical properties, consistency, and recovery rates.

Organised by the Aluminium Extrusion Manufacturers Association of India (ALEMAI), ALUMEX India 2025 serves as the premier platform to advance the aluminium extrusion industry in India, with a strong focus on innovation, skill development, and sustainability.
